Golf-Specific Warm-up For Better Golf Performance
Q: What is the best way to warm-up to play my best off the first tee?
Kevin
A: I’m glad that you realize that warming up for golf is a critical piece of the golf performance puzzle. A good 10 minute golf specific warm-up is probably the easiest way that a golfer can immediately improve their game. When your body is warmed up you are ready to blast out of the gates.
A golf-specific warmup is a critical ingredient to playing your best golf. I was at the 2006 PGA Championship at Medinah and had the opportunity to watch Tiger Woods on the driving range. Before he hit a single shot he spent 10 minutes getting his body ready to swing the club.
Basic movements like half squats will help warm up the hips and lower back. I also like taking my 3-5 irons, gripping them all at once and swinging them like a baseball bat for about a minute or two.
Warming up with a baseball swing will allow you to gradually warm up your rotational muscles without putting stress on your lower back before it is ready. This also does a great job of getting your wrists and forearms nice and loose.
Hip circles (imagine you are playing with a hula hoop) are also good at warming up your hips for rotational, multi-directional movements. Shoulder circles are also excellent for getting the entire shoulder complex ready to swing.
Take the time to warm-up and your game will thank you.
