Lower Back Pain During My Round. What Should I Do?

Q: I notice that under normal conditions I never have back pain. However, when it gets very hot out I notice that lower back pain and tightness comes on very strong. What causes it and what can I do?

James

A: Without knowing your exact situation it is hard to pinpoint what is causing your pain. However, based on the information you have given, I can give you a guess on what may be causing your pain.

Because you said that your back pain is not chronic and is greatest during very hot days I would guess that you pain is a result of dehydration. Everyone is more prone to episodes of low back pain when they are dehydrated and/or under extreme amounts of stress.

While they are common beverages on the course, substances such as soda, coffee, alcohol, and black teas tend to be poor sources of water because of their diuretic (dehydration) effects.

You should never wait until you are thirsty to drink water. By drinking before your thirst mechanism kicks in you may avoid painful and sometimes expensive episodes of back pain. This holds true for any time of the year, not just the summer.

I was given this piece of simple advice by both my chiropractor and back doctor when I was having lower back problems. I have found out that most of the time my lower back tightness can be eliminated by having 16 ounces of water.

Some people may think the answer for minor back pain/tightness cannot be this simple, but it has worked for me and I have passed this advice onto others that have had success with it. I’d give it a try and see if it works for you.
