Steps to Developing a Complete Golf Game Improvement Plan
The winter is a great time to evaluate the current state of your game and what areas you can improve upon in order to make significant steps in your overall game during the next season. In order to figure out where you want to go with your game, you have to look at where you have been and where you currently are. This involves identifying those parts of your game that may be holding you back from reaching the next level and those parts of your game that are strong and that you can build off of.
When creating your plan for next season it is important to follow these steps:
Set Goals Identify what you want to do with your game. For example, your goal during the off-season may be to improve your wedge shots or your golf-specific flexibility and power. Identify where it is that you want to go with your game. This typically involves taking a step back, talking with your teaching professional, seeing where you game has been, where it is, and where you want it to go. It isn’t until you determine your destination that you can develop a plan.
Develop a Plan Once you have decided on the area(s) of your game that you would like to improve upon you must develop a plan to direct you towards achieving your goals. Your plan serves as the roadmap to your improvement, so it is typically best to consult a specialist in the area(s) of your game that concern you.
If your goal is to improve the technical components of your swing, it is very important to consult and work closely with a PGA Teaching Pro to outline the technical improvements you must make to take your swing to the next level. It is important that you do not try to fix your swing yourself as you will often do more harm than good. With your PGA Teaching Professional you can identify your technical weaknesses, develop an improvement strategy and work on the correct mechanics together. In the end you will realize greatly accelerated improvements than if you worked on your own.
The same is true if your goal is to improve your golf-specific conditioning. Increasing your performance through better conditioning is a specific process in which you could benefit greatly from working with a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. A quality golf-specific trainer will identify any golf-specific biomechanical limitations you may have and will address those areas that may be negatively affecting your swing and performance. They will help you outline a plan to improve upon your weak areas so that they eventually become strengths and will help you stay focused on your goals.
By working with professionals and spending your time doing the right things in the right manner you will realize much more significant, rapid, and lasting improvements then if you went at it alone.
Execute Your Plan You can have the best plan in the world along with all the other resources needed to succeed, but it is up to you to follow through and execute the plan that is outlined for you. Never forget that a plan is just a plan until it is executed.
Measure Progress
Any time you start a project of any kind you need to have measurements in place to help quantify the benefit and success, or lack thereof, of the project. The same is true of any golf game improvement plan. You must establish a baseline level of golfing performance which can be used as a reference point for all future comparisons. Sonic Boom Golf and the Pure Power Program already have in place all of the resources you need to measure your improvements.
Note Successes and Areas for Future Improvement As you progress through your plan, you must make sure that you are constantly reevaluating the current status of your progress and the successes you have had. If one of your primary goals was to improve your overall flexibility and three months later you have made significant gains in flexibility, you should take a step back and reevaluate the current status of your plan. Your flexibility may have needed significant improvement a few months ago, but now perhaps it is your balance and strength levels that need to be the new focal point.
If you follow these steps you will have much greater success in both creating and following your golf game improvement plan. If you would like help formulating your complete game improvement plan click here.
