Can Too Much Power Hurt Your Golf Game?

An individual that I work with had an interesting situation come up after participating in the Pure Power Program for a few months. This person had gained a significant amount of power and was hitting their drives 25 yards further than normal. This would normally make the average golfer happy, but this person was a little surprised because he was hitting further down the fairway than he had ever hit before. The problem was that the hazards that were normally 20 yards out of range of his old drives were suddenly causing him problems!

This was a problem because he was playing the course with his old distances. My suggestion to him was to put the driver away and tee off with either a 3 or 5 wood. He looked at me like I was crazy, but I told him that since he has so much more power now that he should use it to his advantage by developing his course management skills.

By using the 3 or 5 wood he would gain a significant amount of accuracy off the tee but would lose no distance (in fact he might even gain some) compared to his old driver distances because of the additional power he can develop. He’s got power to spare and because of it his 5 wood now carries as far as his old driver distance.

Remember that the goal off the tee is not to rip it as far as possible every time. The purpose is to put yourself in a good position to approach the green and give yourself a better chance at scoring well.

I often practice what I preach on the golf course. If I am on a tight driving hole I can put away the driver, bring out the 3 iron and still hit the ball 240-250 yards, but with a lot more accuracy and control than I would normally have with a driver. That is part of the joy of having power to spare. Even thought you have the power does not mean you have to use it every single time. This gives you many more options when you are choosing how to play a hole and a course.
